Does direct mail still work for law firms?

Yes. Direct mail for law firms works because a postcard reaches people who never click an ad, and it stays in the house long after an ad has scrolled past. It is one of the few channels where you choose the exact streets your message lands on, and where past clients and old leads can be reached without an algorithm deciding whether they see you.

Mail is at its strongest next to your digital channels, not instead of them. The same household that receives your postcard also sees your Facebook ads, which is why we run both from one plan and one report.

  • Reaches people your ads miss. Older audiences and people who never click still read what arrives at home.
  • It stays in the house. A postcard sits on the counter for days; an ad is gone in a second.
  • You pick the streets. Target by ZIP code, carrier route or a list of past leads and former clients.
  • It feels personal. A letter from an attorney carries weight that a banner ad never will.

Which direct mail campaigns do we run for law firms?

Direct mail marketing for attorneys is not one postcard. We pick the campaigns that match your practice area, your market and the rules in your state.

Neighborhood saturation (EDDM)

Every home on the carrier routes you choose, with no mailing list needed. Best for building name recognition in the ZIP codes your cases come from.

Past lead reactivation

Mail to the leads who inquired but never signed. They already raised their hand, and a postcard often restarts the conversation.

Former client mail

Stay in front of clients you have already helped, with a reminder that referrals are welcome.

Targeted lists

Mail selected households by area, homeownership, age or other permitted criteria, for practice areas where the audience is specific.

Referral partner mail

Letters and updates to chiropractors, doctors, body shops and other professionals who send you cases.

Community and event mail

Printed invitations for safety nights, sponsorship events and community days, matched with a simple booking page.

What does a personal injury law firm mailer say?

Most of the direct mail for law firms we run is personal injury, so here are three examples written for injury practices. Each one has a single offer, a tracking number and a QR code.

Car accident

Hurt in a crash? You may have a claim

Free case review with a licensed attorney. We deal with the insurance company so you can focus on getting better.

Mailed to: homes on the carrier routes with the most crashes in your county

Past leads

Still dealing with your accident?

If your claim is unresolved, or the insurer has gone quiet, a short call costs nothing and may change the outcome.

Mailed to: everyone who inquired in the last 12 months and never signed

Former clients

Thank you. Who else can we help?

If a friend or family member is hurt, pass on our number. We will treat them the way we treated you.

Mailed to: clients whose cases have closed

Every piece is written to your state bar’s rules. Where the rules require it, envelopes and pieces carry the word “Advertisement”, and no injury or wrongful death mailer goes out inside your state’s waiting period after an accident.

What are the rules for law firm direct mail?

Mailed solicitation is allowed in most states, but it is tightly regulated. The ABA treats written mail as permitted contact, unlike live phone calls (ABA Model Rule 7.3), and each state adds its own requirements on top.

Waiting period after an accident

Many states bar injury and wrongful death mailers for a set period after the event. Florida, for example, requires the accident to have happened more than 30 days before the mailing (Rule 4-7.18).

“Advertisement” labeling

Several states require the word “Advertisement” on the envelope and on the piece itself. We build it into the design.

Say how you got their details

Where required, the letter must explain how the firm learned about the recipient’s situation.

No look-alike legal documents

A mailer must not resemble a pleading or court paper, and sample contracts must be marked clearly as samples.

Filing and record keeping

Some bars require copies of mailings to be filed or kept on record. We keep a copy of every piece we send for you.

Attorney approval before print

Nothing goes to print until an attorney at your firm has read and approved the final piece.

This page is general information, not legal advice on your own advertising. Your firm remains responsible for compliance in every state where a piece lands, and we check each campaign with you before it mails.

How does Caseload Marketing run direct mail for law firms?

Our direct mail for law firms follows the same eight steps on every campaign, so a mailing is a measured channel rather than a printing bill.

01

Targeting

We choose ZIP codes, carrier routes or lists from where your best cases actually come, not where it is cheapest to mail.

02

Offer and copy

One clear offer per piece, written in plain English, with the next step impossible to miss.

03

Design and print

Postcards, letters and folded mailers designed in your branding and printed in the sizes USPS accepts.

04

Compliance check

Every piece checked against your state’s advertising rules and approved by your firm before print.

05

Tracking built in

A campaign-only phone number and a QR code that lands on a page built for that mailing.

06

Timing and cadence

Mail dates planned around your intake capacity, with repeat drops where repetition pays.

07

Intake follow-through

Calls answered, leads logged in your CRM and followed up by email, exactly like a Meta lead.

08

Reporting

Calls, scans, leads and cost per lead from mail, in the same monthly report as your other channels.

Measurement

How do you track results from direct mail?

Every mailing gets its own phone number, its own QR code and its own landing page, so responses are counted rather than guessed. That is what turns direct mail for law firms from a leap of faith into a channel you can compare with Meta ads on cost per lead.

  • Campaign-only phone number. Calls are recorded against that mailing and forwarded straight to your intake line.
  • QR code to a matching page. Scans land on a page written for the same offer, with a short form.
  • CRM tagging. Every mail lead is labeled by campaign and drop date, so you can see which streets responded.
  • Matchback reporting. Signed cases are matched back to the mailing list, so you see cost per case, not just cost per call.
  • Digital follow-up. We can show Facebook ads to the same ZIP codes while your mail is landing.

How do we launch a law firm mail campaign?

Four steps from first call to mail in mailboxes, usually within a few weeks.

  1. Plan. We look at where your cases come from, pick the routes or list, and agree the offer, volume and budget.
  2. Create. Copy, design and compliance check, then your attorney approves the final piece.
  3. Mail. Printing, postage and drop dates handled for you, with tracking live before the first piece lands.
  4. Measure and repeat. Calls, scans and signed cases reviewed, then we mail again to what worked.

Mail takes longer to show results than paid ads: allow a few weeks from drop date, and judge a campaign over repeat drops rather than one mailing.

Which personal injury campaigns work best by mail?

We run direct mail for personal injury firms only, and it works hardest where the audience is local, where the claim is not yet urgent, or where the household already knows your name.

Car accident saturation mail

Every home on the carrier routes with the most collisions in your county, building the name recognition that makes your ads and referrals convert.

Past injury leads

Claimants who enquired and never signed. They already raised their hand, and a postcard often restarts the conversation.

Former injury clients

The people most likely to refer the next case, reminded that your firm is still here and still taking cases.

Slip and fall neighborhoods

Targeted routes around the apartment complexes, retail strips and winter hazards that produce premises claims.

Mass tort claimant outreach

Mail reaches claimants where digital targeting is restricted, with qualifying built into the response path.

Referral partner mail

Letters and case updates to the chiropractors, physicians and body shops who send you injury cases.

Mail performs best beside our Facebook ads for law firms, email follow-up and AI voice agents, run by one law firm marketing agency. See how we run an account, or read about Caseload Marketing.

Direct mail for law firms: FAQs

Answers to the questions attorneys ask us most about mail campaigns.

Does direct mail work for law firms?

Yes. Direct mail for law firms reaches households that paid ads never touch, stays in the home for days and can be aimed street by street. It works best alongside digital channels, where the same household sees your postcard and your Facebook ads in the same week.

How much does law firm direct mail cost?

Direct mail for law firms costs three things: printing, postage and the size of the drop. USPS Every Door Direct Mail Retail needs no postage permit and no mailing list, which keeps entry costs low, while targeted lists cost more per household but waste less. We build the budget back from what a signed case is worth to your firm.

Can law firms mail accident victims?

In most states, yes, but only after a waiting period. Florida, for example, requires that the accident happened more than 30 days before the mailing, and several other states have similar rules. We check your state’s rule for every campaign and never mail inside a waiting period.

Does a law firm mailer have to say “Advertisement”?

In many states, yes. Rules commonly require the word “Advertisement” on the outside of the envelope and on the piece itself, along with other disclosures. We build every requirement into the design before it goes to print.

What is EDDM, and is it right for a law firm?

Every Door Direct Mail is a USPS service that delivers your piece to every address on the carrier routes you choose, with no mailing list and no postage permit, up to 5,000 pieces a day per ZIP code (USPS EDDM). It suits law firms building name recognition in the areas their cases come from.

How do you track responses from direct mail?

Every direct mail campaign we run gets its own phone number, QR code and landing page. Calls and scans are recorded against that mailing, leads are tagged in your CRM by drop date, and signed cases are matched back to the list so you see cost per case.

How long does it take to see results from direct mail?

Calls usually start within days of the drop and continue for two to three weeks, because people keep a postcard before acting on it. Judge a mail program over several drops to the same area rather than a single mailing.

What format works best for a law firm mailer?

Postcards are the cheapest way to be seen, since there is nothing to open. Letters in plain envelopes suit sensitive follow-ups, such as writing to a claimant whose case has stalled. We test formats within the sizes USPS accepts for your chosen service.

Should we choose EDDM or a targeted mailing list?

EDDM is best for saturation: every home on a route, at the lowest cost per piece. A targeted list is best when you know exactly who you want, such as past leads, former clients or specific households. Many firms run both.

Do you write and design the mail pieces?

Yes. Our team writes the copy, designs the piece in your branding, checks it against your state’s advertising rules and sends it for your attorney’s approval before anything is printed.
